My Take

I think of Stone Cold Steve Austin as the moment wrestling stopped being pantomime and became cultural commentary. The Texas Rattlesnake's feud with his boss tapped into something universal — every frustrated employee on the planet was vicariously flipping off management through him. What impresses me more is the second act: he moved into acting and podcasting without clinging to past glory, interviewing his peers with surprising generosity and curiosity. The 2009 WWE Hall of Fame induction was a formality; his real monument is that shattered-glass entrance theme that still raises arena roofs. Few performers ever own an era so completely.
