Suguru Egawa

Suguru Egawa had a fastball people describe as rising, which is physically impossible and tells you everything about how it looked from the batter's box. He should have been a national hero. Instead the manoeuvring over how he joined the Yomiuri Giants, the notorious blank day and the trade that sent Shigeru Kobayashi the other way, made him the villain of Japanese baseball before he had thrown a professional pitch. None of it was about his pitching. He wore down and retired at thirty-two, and I think leaving with talent unspent is exactly why the legend outgrew the record. He commentates now, calmly, like a man who long ago stopped explaining himself.
