My Take
The first thing people notice about Taiyo Matsumoto's art is that it looks wrong. Bodies bend where they shouldn't, perspective drifts, lines wobble as if drawn in a moving car. The second thing they notice is that this supposedly broken drawing captures motion and interior weather more accurately than most polished work ever manages. Born in Tokyo in 1967 and working professionally since the 1980s, he has built a body of work, Hanaotoko, Tekkonkinkreet, Ping Pong, No. 5, that refuses to settle into a genre.
