Takao Kawaguchi

Judo has this deceptive simplicity: you show up, you bow, you get thrown on your back repeatedly, and somewhere in all that you build something unshakeable. At 164cm he was never going to bully anyone with size, which honestly makes the discipline more impressive — technique and composure over raw physical presence. He went all the way to Meiji University, which in postwar Japan meant leaving Hiroshima and grinding through a rigorous academic-athletic world. I find myself drawn to athletes like this, the ones whose careers lived mostly on the mat rather than on magazine covers. Quiet, methodical, rooted in craft.
