The D.O.C.

The D.O.C. is one of hip-hop's great behind-the-scenes architects, and I find his story quietly heartbreaking. This Dallas native ghost-wrote and shaped records for N.W.A and Eazy-E, then a car accident took the voice he needed for his own solo stardom. Most people would have walked away; instead he kept building the music through writing and production. I respect that refusal to disappear more than almost any chart success. The artists who define an era often stand offstage, and his fingerprints are all over a sound the world still loves. His pen never lost its voice.
