My Take

Timo Tolkki is a hero to anyone who came up on European power metal. As the long-standing guitarist, songwriter and producer of Stratovarius, he basically helped codify that genre's blend of neoclassical shred and soaring melody. More than twenty years steering the band's sound is a staggering tenure, and his fingerprints are all over the scene's golden era. What I find compelling is the restless creativity; even his solo and later projects show someone constantly chasing the grand, symphonic statement. For Finnish metal's outsized global influence, Tolkki is one of the architects, and I think that legacy is secure.
