My Take

Todd Field is one of those filmmakers who makes you feel the weight of silence like a physical thing, and the fact that he's only directed three features in over two decades somehow makes each one hit harder. In the Bedroom was a gut-punch debut about grief and revenge that earned him his first Oscar nominations, Little Children followed with a sharp, almost suffocating portrait of suburban longing, and then he disappeared for sixteen years and came back with Tár — a film so precise, so uncomfortable, and so unapologetically cerebral that it racked up six Academy Award nominations on its own. Cate Blanchett's performance is rightly legendary, but that's Field's doing too. He's a patient, exacting director who clearly has no interest in Hollywood rhythms, and honestly, that restraint is exactly what makes his work unforgettable.
