My Take
Some singers are known for their image; Tomiko Van is known for her voice. Born in 1979 in Yamato, Kumamoto Prefecture, she became the voice at the front of Do As Infinity, the band she has fronted since 1999. What strikes me is how instantly identifiable she is. Two or three seconds of that slightly husky, unhurried delivery and you know exactly who is singing. That is rarer than people assume. She also writes lyrics and has taken acting work, which suggests someone more interested in doing the job well than in occupying the spotlight. The band split in 2005 and later resumed activity, and reunions are usually where nostalgia quietly replaces music. Hers did not feel that way. She kept singing in a present-tense voice rather than an imitation of an old recording. I suspect that is why her catalogue still works on listeners who were not even born when it was new.
