Aimer

I'll be honest, the first time Aimer's voice hit me I thought she had a cold, that gorgeous sandpaper rasp catches you off guard, and then about thirty seconds later it's wrecked you and you're not sure when that happened. That's her whole trick: she doesn't oversell anything, she just lets that smoky low register do the quiet emotional damage, which is exactly why her songs keep showing up over the credits of shows at the precise moment your guard is down. I love that she mostly stays out of the spotlight and lets the voice and the words carry it, writing a lot of her own lyrics so the world feels like one person's vision instead of a committee's. For a singer from Kumamoto, she sounds like a whole night sky, and I find that genuinely hard to explain.
