My Take

I have such a soft spot for Hisashi Eguchi, because he's one of those artists whose line just oozes cool. He burst out as a gag manga guy with Stop!! Hibari-kun! and Susume!! Pirates, but somewhere along the way he basically morphed into an illustrator who could draw a girl with one impossibly elegant stroke and make her feel like the whole 1980s breathed through her. And yes, I have to bring up the legend of him perpetually missing deadlines, leaving chapters dangling forever, which somehow only makes me love the guy more, the lovable rascal. To this day I'll glance at some ad or book cover, clock that breezy, slightly melancholy line, and just know it's Eguchi. That's not skill, that's a fingerprint. From Minamata, Kumamoto, no less. A genuine national treasure of vibe.
