Tommy Shaw is, to my ear, the secret weapon of classic Styx. Born in Montgomery, Alabama in 1953, he became the band's co-lead vocalist while also stretching out with Damn Yankees and Shaw Blades and a string of solo records. I am drawn less to him as a flashy guitar hero and more as a craftsman whose soaring high tenor and songwriting instincts hold a song together.
