Tomoka Takeuchi

Tomoka Takeuchi, born in 1983 in Asahikawa, Hokkaido, took silver in the women's parallel giant slalom at the 2014 Sochi Winter Olympics and finished fifth in the same event at Pyeongchang in 2018. For readers outside Japan, alpine snowboarding is the discipline's least glamorous branch — no halfpipe spectacle, just two riders dropping side by side down a gated course, close enough to read each other's nerve. It rewards precision and composure rather than showmanship. What impresses me is not the medal in isolation but the span around it. Standing on an Olympic podium is a moment; still being inside the world's top five four years later is a career. Snow sports punish anyone who lets a season slip, because equipment, conditions and rivals all move on without you. Coming from Asahikawa, she became globally competitive — and any honest account of Japanese women's snowboarding has to begin with her.
