My Take
Tomonohana Shinya is one of those guys who makes you rethink what a sumo wrestler looks like off the dohyo — born in Kumamoto in 1964, he actually went through Nihon University before stepping into the ring, which I find genuinely impressive. There's this image of sumo as a world where raw physicality is everything, and then you meet someone who did the academic track first and you realize the sport pulls in all kinds of people from all kinds of paths. He turned pro at nearly 28 after teaching PE and still made komusubi, and the arc alone — Kumamoto kid, university graduate, then bare-bones commitment to a brutally demanding sport — earns him quiet respect from me.
