My Take
Braxton's voice is the thing I keep returning to: that smoky, low contralto that can make a simple lyric ache. Winning Best New Artist in 1994 announced her, but the part that earns my respect is the longevity, including a Grammy for Best R&B Album in 2015, two decades into her career. That is the difference between a moment and an artist. She acts, plays piano and carries a TV personality's charm, yet everything orbits that singular instrument. For me she belongs in the small club of singers whose tone you would recognize from a single held note.
