My Take

What I admire most about Tony Shalhoub is his refusal to be typecast by his own success. Most actors would have ridden Monk's obsessive-compulsive detective into comfortable repetition; Shalhoub instead kept returning to the stage and reinvented himself as the stubborn father in The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, winning yet another Emmy in his sixties. There's a craftsman's humility in his work — the Lebanese-American kid from Green Bay who learned his trade in theater and never confused fame with skill. He makes neurosis tender and pomposity lovable, which is far harder than it looks. For my money, he is one of the most quietly complete actors America has produced.
