Torata Nanbu

Torata Nanbu died in January 2024 at the age of seventy-two. He was the first leader of Dachō Club and then spent more than three decades with the performance troupe Dengeki Network, and that second chapter is the tell. Most Japanese comedians never acquire it, because most Japanese comedy is verbal, built on the rhythm of the manzai duo or the timing of a variety-show panel. Nanbu worked in a different register, the physical and confrontational kind that aims less at a clean laugh than at leaving a mark on whoever witnessed it. Born in Tsuruoka, Yamagata Prefecture, in 1951, he sustained that approach across decades. Anyone can be reckless at twenty-five. Doing the same work at sixty, with the same body absorbing it, is a genuinely different proposition, and it requires a kind of stubbornness I have to respect even when the material was never designed to be comfortable. His existence is evidence that the Japanese comedy scene was wider and stranger than its televised mainstream ever suggested.
