Toshio Iwai

Toshio Iwai is one of those rare people where listing his job titles — artist, composer, designer, TV producer, picture-book author — actually undersells how strange and wonderful his career is. Born in Aichi Prefecture in 1962 and trained at the University of Tsukuba, he built a reputation as a media artist who blurs the line between music, play, and visual experience in ways that feel genuinely childlike without being childish. His interactive installations invite you to make sound by touching light, which sounds like a cheesy museum exhibit but somehow ends up being one of the more moving things you can experience with your hands. The fact that he also went and made picture books just feels right — this is a guy who has never once asked himself whether something fits neatly into a category, and that restless curiosity across six decades is kind of quietly inspiring.
