Toshirō Miyazaki

Toshiro Miyazaki, born in 1988 in Karatsu, Saga Prefecture, is an infielder for the Yokohama DeNA BayStars. He is listed at 171 cm, which in professional baseball terms is small, and that single fact reframes everything else about him. A hitter that size cannot win arguments with raw power, so whatever he has built has to be built out of contact skill, timing, and pitch recognition. Personally I find that the most satisfying kind of hitter to watch. The swing is an answer to the pitch rather than a statement made in advance, and the good ones look almost unhurried. It also tends to age well, because bat control does not evaporate the way bat speed does. There is a second thing worth noting. He came out of Karatsu in Kyushu, settled in Yokohama, and became a name associated with that one club. In an era of constant movement, a long trusted tenure in a single uniform is its own kind of achievement.
