My Take

Trijntje Oosterhuis is, for my money, one of the great voices the Netherlands has produced. Starting in a band with her brother in 1990 and then conquering a solo career, she has racked up a Silver Harp, a Golden Harp, and three Edison Awards, which speaks to a depth of homeland respect few singers ever earn. The jazz grounding is what wins me over: I read her as a vocalist who carries emotion through tone itself rather than vocal acrobatics. There is something grounded and genuine about a national star whose journey began making music with family, and I trust that warmth completely.
