My Take

I try to be skeptical of hype, but Victor Wembanyama breaks my skepticism. A 224-centimeter frame should not move like that, handle like that, or shoot like that — the Alien nickname is less a joke than a fair description. What impresses me more is his temperament: he talks like a student of the game, not a chosen one. Landing with the San Antonio Spurs, the league's finest finishing school for big men, may prove the luckiest break of his era. Health permitting, I genuinely believe we are watching the opening chapters of an all-time career unfold in real time.
