My Take

Wes Craven is one of my personal heroes of the horror genre. A Johns Hopkins-educated intellectual who gave us both Freddy Krueger and Ghostface, he understood that the best fear is laced with wit and self-awareness. The meta-genius of Scream still feels decades ahead of its time, and films like The Hills Have Eyes proved how unflinching he could be. Yet he could also direct something as earnest as Music of the Heart, which tells you how wide his range really was. Since his death in 2015 his grammar of terror has only grown more influential. I hold him in deep respect.
