My Take
William Cohen is the kind of figure I find genuinely instructive. A Maine Republican who served in both the House and Senate, he then became Secretary of Defense under Democrat Bill Clinton, a cross-party appointment that takes uncommon trust and integrity to pull off. A Bowdoin-educated attorney, author, and teacher, he carried an intellectual range well beyond pure politics. What earns my respect is his willingness to put country above party at a moment when that was already becoming rare. In an era defined by polarization, Cohen's example as a bridge-builder feels not just admirable but instructive, a reminder of what statesmanship once looked like.
