My Take
Willy DeVille is, to me, one of American music's great underappreciated curators. Over thirty-five years, first with Mink DeVille and later solo, he wove together blues, soul, R&B, and Tex-Mex into something unmistakably his own. The collaborators he chose, from Doc Pomus to Jack Nitzsche, tell you everything about his taste and ambition. What I admire most is that he never chased trends; he simply pursued his own romantic, smoky vision. His passing in 2009 closed the book on a singular voice that still rewards anyone willing to dig in.
