Wiz Khalifa is one of those artists who came out of absolutely nowhere — born in Minot, North Dakota, raised in Pittsburgh — and just carved his own lane so thoroughly that the industry had no choice but to catch up. I love that his whole persona has always felt genuinely his own: the lanky frame, the rolling papers, the effortlessly melodic rap style that bridges hard rap and pop without feeling calculated. "Black and Yellow" turned Pittsburgh pride into a national anthem, but it was "See You Again" that showed the world he could reach a completely different emotional register. Winning Best New Artist at the BET Awards in 2011 felt inevitable in hindsight — Taylor Gang was everywhere. He's not always the loudest voice in the room, but he's one of the most consistent, and I respect the hustle of building a genuine business empire on top of the music.
