Yared Nuguse

What I admire most about Yared Nuguse is how he thrives in the cruelest event in track. The 1500 meters and the mile leave nowhere to hide, and yet this Louisville-raised runner keeps delivering, from an NCAA title to Olympic bronze in Paris and the North American outdoor mile record. Middle-distance running rewards both reckless courage and ice-cold patience, and he seems to carry both. His playful nickname, "The Goose," hints at a runner who takes the racing seriously but not himself. I find him one of the most quietly compelling American distance runners of his generation.
