Yōko Minamida

Yoko Minamida was born in Tokyo in 1933 and died there in 2009. She won the Blue Ribbon Award for Best Supporting Actress in 1964 and a Golden Arrow Award, working through the years when Japanese cinema was at its most productive. But the reason younger audiences in Japan know her name is not, I suspect, any of her films. In November 2008 she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's disease, and her husband, the actor Hiroyuki Nagato, allowed cameras to document her decline and his caregiving. The result aired on television. I find that decision genuinely difficult to sit with. There is an obvious argument that a woman who could no longer consent was exposed to a national audience, and I don't think that objection is unreasonable. But it aired at a moment when dementia in Japan was still discussed mostly in euphemism, by families who felt they had to hide it. Seeing it plainly, on a face the country had known for fifty years, did something that no public health campaign had managed. Whatever else it was, it was her last role, and it landed.
