My Take
Fronting a rock band is one thing; writing almost all of its songs is another. Yoohei Kawakami does both for Alexandros, the band he founded back when it was still called Champagne, and he does it while also acting and hosting a radio show on Tokyo FM. That combination usually produces a jack of all trades. It hasn't here. What strikes me about him is that none of the side work reads as a singer dabbling. The acting isn't a novelty booking, the radio show isn't a promo slot. Born in Kawasaki in 1982 and educated at Aoyama Gakuin University, he has kept the same project running long enough to rename it and carry the audience through the change, which is harder than it sounds. My honest read is that he isn't chasing visibility. He's chasing a specific sound in his head, and everything else he does seems to orbit that. At 181 cm he has the stage presence too, but presence was never the scarce resource. The songs were.
