Yoshiko Ishiba

The detail that made me smile is the occupation line on her record: office worker. Yoshiko Ishiba was born in Tokyo in 1956, went through Joshi Gakuin, read law at Keio University, and worked at Marubeni, a full career of her own, and yet she is described nearly everywhere in a single phrase, as the wife of former prime minister Shigeru Ishiba. Political spouses hold one of the oddest positions in public life. Nobody voted for them, they rarely chose the exposure, and they get scored anyway for things they never said. When a husband climbs to the top job, it is usually the wife whose ordinary routine gets dismantled to make room for it. She rarely speaks for herself in public, and I don't read that as a gap. Some people have earned the right to remain a private citizen with a private record.
