Yumi Sugimoto

Yumi Sugimoto, born 1 April 1989 in Osaka, works across a set of overlapping jobs that Japanese entertainment treats as one continuous career: fashion model, gravure model, tarento, actress. She stands 168 cm and is signed to the agency Face Planning. To an outside reader that list can look like a lack of focus. It isn't. In Japan, that combination is a recognised professional path, and the hard part is not entering it but staying in it. The window where youth alone sustains this kind of career is shorter than people assume, and the performers who are still booking work a decade in have usually done something less visible than glamour to earn it. She was a runner-up in a Pichi Lemon model audition in elementary school, started modeling in her second year of junior high, and worked as an exclusive junior model for Pichi Lemon and bis. There is no headline scandal doing the work of a biography. What there is instead is durability: an Osaka native who went to Tokyo and has kept a place there. That is quieter than most stories, and harder than most.
