Yūto Kanakubo

When a Japanese pitcher moves abroad, the conversation is almost always about the major leagues. Yuto Kanakubo took a different road: out of Nippon Professional Baseball with the Tokyo Yakult Swallows and across to the Kiwoom Heroes of Korea's KBO League. Born in November 1999, he is still young enough that this reads less like an ending than a second opening. He comes from Yachiyo, Chiba, was the ace of a youth team that won a national title, and pitched for Yakult from 2018 to 2025. Now he is a name on a roster in a country whose language and baseball culture are not his own. Pulling on an unfamiliar uniform in order to keep pitching takes a kind of nerve that box scores never capture. I have no idea how the next few seasons will go for him, and that is exactly why this is one I want to keep an eye on.
