My Take
Yuzuki Muroi has one of the least tidy career paths on this site. Race queen and model work, then fiction, then a long second life as an essayist and television commentator arguing politics on daytime programmes. On paper it looks like three different people. I read it as one consistent temperament: a writer who says the thing everyone else has decided it is safer to leave unsaid. Sometimes that produced novels, sometimes arguments and backlash. Born in Hachinohe, Aomori in 1970, she remains a divisive figure in Japanese media. But a commentator nobody disagrees with is usually one who has not said anything, and I would rather read the awkward one.
