My Take
Zack Snyder may be the most argued-about director of his generation, and I think that is precisely his value. Coming up through music videos, he made his feature debut with the 2004 Dawn of the Dead remake and has been composing painterly, slow-motion mythologies ever since. I will not pretend every script holds together, but no working filmmaker burns images into my memory the way he does. There is something endearing about a Green Bay, Wisconsin kid building cathedrals of excess in Hollywood. Love him or loathe him, he has a genuine visual signature — and in an era of interchangeable blockbusters, that alone earns my respect.
