My Take
Zalmay Khalilzad strikes me as one of the most fascinating bridge figures of his generation. Born in 1951 in Mazar-i-Sharif and educated at the American University of Beirut, he rose to the heights of American diplomacy, serving as ambassador to the United Nations and as special representative for Afghan reconciliation. His work is inevitably contested, given how high the stakes were, but I respect a man who tied half his life to the fate of his birthplace. As a story of an immigrant operating at the very top of statecraft, his name deserves remembering, whatever one's politics.
