My Take
Max Zhang fascinates me because his martial background is not decoration, it is the engine of his screen presence. A former wushu athlete trained at Chengdu Sport University, he moves with a precision that pure actors can never fake. What elevates him beyond a stuntman, though, is the melancholy he brings to villains; his menace always carries a flicker of wounded humanity. His Best Supporting Actor win at the Hong Kong Film Awards felt earned, not lucky. I see him as one of the most compelling faces in modern Chinese action cinema, an artist who lets his eyes do as much work as his fists.
