My Take
Abe Laboriel Jr. is the kind of musician I find endlessly compelling: a powerhouse who has anchored Paul McCartney's touring band for over two decades. Holding down the groove behind a literal Beatle, night after night, is pressure most drummers will never know. Born into a dynasty of Mexican-American musicians and trained at Berklee, he plays with this enormous, grinning physicality that radiates pure joy. I love that he is technically a sideman yet clearly the most exuberant person on any stage. He proves that supporting greatness can be its own kind of greatness.
