My Take
Agnieszka Holland is, to my mind, one of the conscience-keepers of European cinema. Trained under Zanussi and Wajda, then forced into exile around Poland's martial law, she has spent a career staring directly at political and historical pain rather than looking away. The hardware backs it up: a Golden Globe for Europa Europa, a Silver Bear at Berlin, a Czech Lion. But what moves me is not the trophy shelf; it is her refusal to soften. Well past seventy, she still makes muscular, morally urgent films, and that durability of vision earns my deep respect.
