Akira Matsumoto

Akira Matsumoto is one of those guys whose career was spent mostly out of the spotlight. Born in 1977 in Kumamoto, he pitched at Koshien twice for Kumamoto Technical High School and went to the Daiei Hawks in the second round. Kumamoto isn't exactly the factory that churns out professional athletes the way the big cities do, so just making it to that level already says something about the grind it took. He never won a first-team game, yet he stayed in the game for years as a batting practice pitcher and then a scout, and that kind of loyalty is its own statement: the work spoke, and he didn't need the fanfare.
