Ako

Ako is one of those performers whose name does half the work before she even walks on screen — one syllable, clean and sharp, the kind that stands out in a cast list without trying. Born in Shibuya back in 1958, she's a product of that postwar Tokyo energy that quietly produced a whole generation of serious, no-nonsense stage and screen actors. Discovered as a teenager by Shūji Terayama and trained on the stage of his avant-garde Tenjō Sajiki, she came up through about the most demanding school a young actress could have, and honestly I respect that. That's the archetype of the craftsperson actress who shows up, does the work, and lets the role speak. I'd always watch her if she appeared.
