My Take

What I admire about D. J. Carrasco is the quiet dignity of the journeyman. From small-town Safford, Arizona, this tall right-hander grinded his way onto a major league mound without the glamour that fans usually celebrate. To me, relievers like him are the connective tissue of baseball, eating tough innings and keeping games alive. The detail that wins me over, though, is his later turn as a pitching coach for the Syracuse Mets. Passing hard-won craft down to younger arms is its own kind of greatness, and I have deep respect for people who keep serving the game from the shadows.
