Alan Bennett

Alan Bennett is the rare writer I'd call a national treasure without hesitation. Born near Leeds in 1934 and a former teacher of medieval history at Oxford, he carries a scholar's eye into everything he writes, whether plays, screenplays, or his beloved diaries. The Tony, Olivier, and BAFTA hauls speak to his command of the stage, yet what charms me is the diarist label sitting beside them. I suspect he loves the quiet, ordinary moments of daily life with the same warmth he brings to the theatre's grand gestures. Still writing into his nineties, he strikes me as the platonic ideal of a craftsman of words.
