Ryuhei Matsuda

I have a real soft spot for Ryūhei Matsuda, because he turns languor into an art form. He's not the chest-pounding hero type; he can just stand there, half-mumbling, eyes drifting, and somehow he quietly pulls the whole frame toward him. That's not nothing, that's craft. He announced himself early with Ōshima's "Gohatto," walking off with a Blue Ribbon newcomer prize, and from then on the vibe was unmistakable: this kid is no ordinary face. What I love is the economy, the long pauses, the glances doing the heavy lifting, all that confident empty space most actors are too scared to leave. You think you're getting a sleepy slacker, then you feel the spine underneath. That push and pull is the whole magic, and at 183cm it's almost unfair how easily he steals scenes.
