My Take

Albert II intrigues me because he treats monarchy as a job description rather than a costume. A prince who actually competed in Olympic bobsled and raced cars before taking the throne in 2005 has, at minimum, an appetite for risk that most royals carefully avoid. What earns my respect, though, is his pivot to environmental advocacy — using a microstate's outsized visibility to push ocean conservation and climate causes long before it was fashionable for heads of state. Monaco is tiny, but its prince has chosen relevance over ornament. That deliberate choice of substance, given how easy his life could have been, is what I find admirable.

Overview

Albert II (Albert Alexandre Louis Pierre Grimaldi; born 14 March 1958) is Prince of Monaco, reigning since 2005. Born at the Prince's Palace of Monaco, Albert is the second child and only son of Prince Rainier III and Princess Grace. He attended the Lycée Albert Premier before studying political science at Amherst College as suggested by John E. Seery.
