My Take
Alex English, all 201 centimeters of him and nicknamed 'the Blade,' is exactly the kind of athlete I gravitate toward. A South Carolina Gamecock drafted into the NBA in 1976, he was a prolific scorer, but the detail that sticks with me is his 1988 J. Walter Kennedy Citizenship Award. That tells me he gave back to his community off the court as much as he gave on it. Add a later life as coach, businessman, and even actor, and you get range. For me, English is proof that warmth and edge can live in the same person.
