Alex Van Halen

Everyone talks about Eddie Van Halen — the tapping, the tone, the whole guitar-god myth — and rightfully so, but I've always felt Alex was the quiet engine that made the whole thing run. Born in Amsterdam, immigrated to California as a kid, and somehow he and his brother ended up reshaping what rock could sound like: that's a wild ride for anyone. Alex never showboated behind the kit; he played with this locked-in, heavyweight groove that let Eddie's insanity breathe instead of competing with it. That kind of restraint is actually harder than flash, and it's rarer. The band put out some of the most joyful, explosive rock records of the late '70s and '80s, and Alex's drumming is the foundation under all of it. Losing Eddie in 2020 must have been devastating beyond words — they built everything together from childhood. There's something quietly heroic about the guy.
