Alex X. Mooney

Alex Mooney's career fascinates me as a study in political reinvention. Born in Washington, D.C. and educated at Dartmouth, he built a base in Maryland, chaired the state Republican Party, then uprooted himself to win a U.S. House seat in West Virginia. Moving states and rebuilding from scratch takes real nerve and ambition; few politicians dare it. Now reportedly working as a lobbyist, he embodies the full arc of insider Washington life. I don't have to share his views to find his adaptability striking. Whatever you make of him, Mooney is plainly a survivor who knows how the machine works.
