Alison Steadman

Steadman is one of those actors who makes ordinary people feel extraordinary. Her long collaboration with Mike Leigh, from Abigail's Party to Life Is Sweet, produced some of the most truthful portraits of ordinary life in British cinema. Despite an Olivier Award and an OBE, she carries an unpretentious, neighborly warmth that I find irresistible. Stage-trained performers like her bring a lived-in breath to every scene, even on screen. I value actors who can render the small comedies and quiet heartbreaks of everyday life rather than chase heroics, and Steadman does it with a generosity that feels genuinely rare and deeply human.
