My Take
Allen Collins was the soul in the strings of Lynyrd Skynyrd. A Jacksonville kid who co-wrote the band's catalogue with Ronnie Van Zant, he gave Southern rock some of its most aching guitar work, and that Free Bird solo still raises the hair on my arms. He died far too young at 37 in 1990, but the body of melody he left behind keeps playing across the world. I have a deep fondness for musicians who speak through their instrument rather than the microphone. Collins was a storyteller in six strings, and that craft never fades.
