My Take
Allen Toussaint is, to me, the sound of New Orleans itself. What I find most admirable is his choice to shine as a craftsman rather than a star, writing, arranging, and producing songs that other artists carried to fame. A Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee and National Medal of Arts recipient who stayed largely in the background, he embodied a kind of generous, understated mastery. I have a real soft spot for that backroom genius. Every time I revisit the rhythm and blues he helped build, I feel I'm hearing the foundation of a whole city's music.
