My Take
André Gide is one of those writers I return to when I want literature that refuses to comfort me. Winning the 1947 Nobel Prize was almost the least interesting thing about him; what I value is his moral honesty, the way works like Strait Is the Gate and The Immoralist lay bare the war between conscience and desire. He had the courage to write openly about homosexuality when it was taboo and to criticise imperialism when silence was safer. Reading him is uncomfortable in the best way, and I think genuine discomfort is what separates real literature from mere entertainment.
