My Take
For me, Tarkovsky isn't a director you watch so much as one you submit to. His films move at the pace of memory and prayer, and the famous dripping water, long takes, and ruined interiors of Stalker or Solaris reward patience that modern viewing habits have almost erased. Coming out of Zavrazhye and the All-Union State Institute of Cinematography to win the Golden Lion and a Cannes directing prize, he had every accolade, yet what moves me is his refusal to entertain on demand. He died at fifty-four, far too soon. I'd urge anyone to meet him slowly, in a dark and quiet room.
